Today we’ll talk about our dreaded metabolism that continues to torture us with poor work performance. Over 40? You know I’m right! All the plastics, chemicals, poor food quality, hormones, stress and being fat itself slows our body’s “burner” right down. Look back even 30 years. Hardly anyone was overweight!
There are a good number of easy changes you can make that WILL help your metabolism beat at a better drum. And today we’ll address 11 of those.

11 Foods That Boos Metabolism
Protein: Yes! it’s that simple! Our metabolic rate is increased to15-30% for a number of hours as our body uses more energy to digest the protein than it does carbs, fats or simple sugars. Think protein drinks, nuts, healthy bars…whatever you love to eat! Start your day with protein to get off on your best foot. I personally like the Ka Chava drink and have been taking it for years! PS: Muscles are toned by protein and a toned muscle burns more than an untoned one.
Iron: All foods with iron, zinc and selenium will affect the thyroid positively. Think all meats, seafood, nuts (walnuts, almonds, pistachios, etc.) and seeds-like chia, pumpkin and flax. Easy to throw in cookies or pancakes!
Chili Peppers: Do you like it hot? Adding in red pepper flakes to pasta, eggs or tuna help your body burn 50 calories more!
Coffee: This is a big- coffee will increase your metabolism by over 11%. Just three cups per day burns 100 calories and will boost your workout increasing the benefits even more.
Tea: Oolong and green tea both push your metabolism higher…up to 10% higher! They also help the body use stored fat for energy.
Legumes: A very high protein and fibrous food it takes a lot of energy to digest beans and legumes. Those that ate a lot of legumes burned 1.5X more calories than the control group! Think humus, in pasta, chickpeas roasted…there are many ways to get your beans and legumes in!
Spices: Ginger in hot water decreases your hunger, enhances satiety and one cup burns 43 calories. I love fresh ginger plus lemon and honey as a drink that settles you and nourishes you at the same time!
Apple Cider Vinegar: Yes, a little tart, but now you can get ACV in chewable and capsules. Over 50 benefits and a few are decreasing the body’s fat storage, reducing liver fat and belly fat. Just 4 tsp per day can burn 270 calories.
Seaweed: Now this may not be in your diet like it is for our Asian friends but getting in iodine (a main component of seaweed) will directly enhance your thyroid function. Spirulina which is an algae is a good choice to take as well!
Coconut Oil: Has been shown to reduce your waist size-yay! The MCT oil is used as energy and not stored as fat! I cook popcorn with it, my healthy pancakes, put it in cookies with grassfed butter…so many uses!
Water: Yes, it’s that simple! Enough water in your body has been shown to increase your metabolism by up to 30%! The body burns calories by taking cooler water and heating it up to the body’s temp!
